Safety First

1 Dec

Monday morning I received an alarming text from school. A young girl had been sexually battered on campus after leaving a nightclub. The suspect has not been found. This happens all too often in this town and it’s really a scary thing to think about. Most people think “oh that could never happen to me,” but the truth of the matter is, it can happen to anyone.

Now I don’t want to be negative nancy here. I think every woman should have something on them at all times that will help them in the case of emergency. I recently invested in a monkey fist self-defense keychain. Yes I know it sounds funny but it’s effective! This keychain comes in different colors, it’s small, and very accessible. When I’m walking home alone at night, I always have my key clenched in my fist ready to go. Then again, maybe I’m just paranoid. But hey, like my mom always told me, “Better to be safe than sorry.”

Ladies, this is an inexpensive self-defense tool that attaches to your keychain and can be used to knock the heck out of any creeper. It comes in a variety of paracord colors (I bought mine in teal), that is wrapped around a steel ball, making it extremely painful when swung against someone.

Foods for Clear Skin

6 Sep

For the past 10 years, I’ve struggled with bad skin. I’ve experimented with different foods and behaviors to see how it affects my skin. I discovered that sweets and starches cause breakouts, and green foods and as well as fruits keep my skin clear. However, once a month I am more prone to breakouts so I try to make changes to my routine and diet to ensure my skin stays clear. This Cosmopolitan article  gives great tips on what adjustments you can make in your diet for better skin.  I’ve heard a lot of these over and over again, but thing is, it actually works. The most important thing is to find what works for you.

 1. Avoid white foods, as hard as it is. Simple carbs, like potatoes and breads are friends of the stomach, enemies of the skin. As terrible as it is, I LOVE Five Guys Burgers & Fries but it takes a toll on my skin. When you’re more prone to breakouts, limit the intake of these foods or substitute for whole grain whenever possible.

2. Plenty of fish in the sea, so don’t be afraid to try new ones. Salmon in particular has a lot of the essential fatty acids and reduce inflammation which “triggers the cell to clog the pore, causing acne” according to the dermotalogist in the article. I found this recipe for salmon to be really simple.

3. Ooze on the olive oil. Believe it or not, consuming fat is good for you (in moderate amounts of course). If you have less than the suggested amount of fat a day (about 2 tablespoons of oil) your skin might not absorb vitamin A, which helps prevent premature aging. I use a little olive oil when I grill chicken breasts and its delish.

4. Tea for the t-zone. Not mentioned in the article but works magic on the skin is white tea. You may have read one of my previous posts on tea here, where I broke down the different types. White tea is as pure as they come, and it’s a great source of antioxidants. Teavana has a great selection of teas, from which I suggest the youthberry white tea.

I’m late I’m late for a very important date! {tea time!}

So I’ve taken up a new interest in Tea. I started looking into it when a good friend of mine introduced me to TEAVANA and the wonderful world of different flavored hot and cold teas.

I went to the Teavana store and purchased my first blend of tea that I sampled in store and was absolutely delicious! I always thought of tea as something similar to chamomile which is nasty but I was pleasantly surprised to find they have a lot of fruity flavors and blends. I’ve chosen to replace all the sugar saturated drinks in my diet like soda and juice with tea, in hopes of being healthier.

Now I know a lot of people aren’t familiar with tea, the different types, and how you can buy it. So I’m going to break it down and maybe you’ll want to try it.

Types of Teas

1. White Teas-The Purest and least processed of them all. Contains very little caffeine, healthy antioxidants and are the best for your skin and complexion. Light in color and taste.

2. Green Teas– The most popular of all teas, and is the beverage of choice in Asia. This tea has only 5-10% the caffeine in coffee per cup. Green tea also contains healthy antioxidants and they help maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range, are good for skin and teeth, and can be used as part of your diet to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.

3. Oolong Teas-a flavorful fragrance and sweet aroma. It is semi-fermented, which gives it approximately 15% of the caffeine in one cup of coffee.  Most people commonly recognize oolong tea as the Chinese tea served in Chinese restaurants. This tea can be helpful for weight loss.

4. Black Teas– Probably the most familiar with because its the one associated with the tea bags you dig into hot water. Black tea is fully fermented, so it has approximately 20% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee and as help maintain cardiovascular function and a healthy circulatory system.

5. Herbal Teas-erbal teas can be broken into three categories: rooibos teas, mate teas, and herbal infusions. Herbal infusions consist of pure herbs, flowers, and fruits. Herbal teas are typically caffeine-free (except Mate teas) and most are rich in vitamin C. They can be delicious hot or iced.

6. Rooibos Teas-Also known as red tea, is made from a South African red bush. This tea is a healthy source of vitamins and minerals; it also contains antioxidants. Naturally caffeine free, Rooibos teas help promote digestion, support your immune system, and promote healthy skin, teeth and bones.

7. Mate Teas– No this is not the tea equivalent of the AXE effect. The name may be misleading because the word Mate means the plant that it comes from, the Mate plant. Mate teas give the same energy as coffee without the jitters. They also may curb your appetite and contain 21 vitamins and minerals. Some blends actually taste like coffee so people usually drink them in the morning for a healthy jump start to their day.

8. Blooming Teas- They actually bloom! Also called artisan or flowering teas, these teas actually ‘bloom’ as they steep. They are hand tied by tea artists and often include some type of flavor or scent along with the beautiful design. Seems romantic to me. I’d love to have edible flowers in my tea.

9. Tea Blends– A mixture of two or more teas to create a unique combination of flavor and healthy essentials. This option allows you to get the health benefits you want and the taste you prefer.

So I hope that this didn’t overwhelm you. I had no idea there were so many types of tea until I researched it. Personally, I prefer sweeter teas with fruit infused flavors that happen to be rich in antioxidants to enhance my complexion. Tea can be bought in stores or most preferably online by the ounce. Now you may be wondering how to even make the tea. Well I had the same question after I bought 4 oz of tea yesterday.

I would suggest getting a single serving teapot if you’re just planning on drinking it yourself. What this ‘teapot’ does, one of which are called the ingenuiTea (pictured bottom left), is that it allows you to mix the tea with hot or cold water and it filters out the clear tea. When tea is ready, you place it on top of your cup, causing a valve at the bottom to release and crystal-clear tea to flow down. You can get these on online for relatively cheap. Hope you learned something!

Look g o o d while working out.

13 Jul

Recently, working out has been making me really happy. An amazing accomplished feeling comes over me after I finish a productive workout. Lately I’ve been doing a lot of cardio but I get SO bored from running in the same spot. Yesterday I tried Zumba for the first time. WOW, what a rush of energy and excitement! If you haven’t tried it, I strongly encourage you to at least try it and have fun with it. Although I felt extremely uncoordinated dancing next to the instructor, who was workin it like the rent was due, I have never sweat so much in my life. It felt great!

I also realized that my wardrobe has a lot to do with the way I feel. Cute fitness clothes makes you feel good inside and out. I thought I’d share a few workout styles I love.  I found that a pair of nice running shoes or cute bright colored shorts really motivates me to work out.

The number one accessory to include in your workout outfit is yes, a water bottle. Actually now that I think about it. This is probably the summer’s number one must have accessory. You know the importance of this if you live in Florida. To me,  Aquafina & Dasani are thee best tasting water brands. Believe it or not, I can tell the brand of the water after tasting it. A little weird, I know.

I LOVE these sneakers. Black never fails to match with any crazy color combo in your workout outfit. They’re a little pricey for my taste but I read the reviews and the price seems to be well worth it. I found these on the Nike site but I’m sure they can be found cheaper elsewhere.

My favorite brand of sports bras is Champion. Their bras are so soft and comfortable, it doesn’t feel like you have one on. I sometimes even sleep in my champion sports bras.

They also offer maximum support and tons of styles and colors. Coordinating my sports bra with my bottoms makes me feel good about going to the gym.

These shorts are great for running or doing workouts on the machine. I love all the variations of colors these shorts come in. My favorite part is that they make your legs look good! I’ve seen these shorts on girls of all sizes and it always flatters.

Here’s a clip of the Zumba moves I learned yesterday! It gets me so PUMPED!
